What Is Acne?

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions—and one of the most frustrating. It can affect people of all ages, from teenagers to adults, and it shows up in many forms: blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, or inflamed red bumps.

Acne is caused by a mix of oil production, clogged pores, bacteria, and inflammation—but everyone’s acne is different. That’s why treatment needs to be personalized, not one-size-fits-all.

Do I need treatment?

You may benefit from professional treatment if:

  • Over-the-counter products haven’t helped
  • You’re developing scarring or dark marks
  • Breakouts are frequent, painful, or widespread
  • Acne is affecting your confidence or daily life
  • You’ve tried multiple products but don’t know what’s working

Getting clear skin isn’t just about looks—it’s about feeling good in your own skin again.

Our Dermatology PA-Cs

Our Physician Assistants (PA-Cs) are often the first step on a patient’s path to clear skin—and they take that responsibility seriously. Trained in medical dermatology, they evaluate your acne type, understand what you’ve already tried, and design a plan that fits your life.

Patients trust our PA-Cs for their honest, kind approach: no judgment, no hype—just real, effective care. Whether it’s walking a teen through their first prescription or helping an adult with deep, hormonal breakouts, they meet each patient with empathy and expertise.

What to Expect

Your visit will include a full skin assessment, a review of your history and products used, and a conversation about what’s bothering you most. Your provider may recommend a mix of treatments such as:

  • Prescription creams or gels
  • Oral antibiotics or hormonal treatments
  • In-office procedures like cortisone injections or chemical peels
  • Skincare recommendations that actually make sense for your skin

We’ll follow up regularly to track your progress, tweak the plan, and celebrate your wins along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes acne?
Acne develops when hair follicles become clogged with oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. Contributing factors include hormonal changes, certain medications, diet, stress, and genetics. Bacteria on the skin, particularly Cutibacterium acnes, can also play a role by causing inflammation.
How long will it take to see results?
Improvement timelines vary depending on the treatment and individual skin response. Generally, noticeable improvements can be seen within 4 to 8 weeks, with more significant results over 3 to 6 months. Consistency and adherence to the prescribed regimen are key to achieving the best outcomes.
Do I need to stop wearing makeup or using my current products?
Not necessarily. It’s important to use non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and oil-free products. Your provider can review your current skincare and makeup products to ensure they’re suitable for acne-prone skin and recommend any necessary adjustments.
Can you help with scarring or dark spots?
Yes. Treatments are available to address post-acne scarring and hyperpigmentation, including topical retinoids, chemical peels, laser therapy, and microneedling. The appropriate treatment depends on the type and severity of the scarring or discoloration.
Is treatment covered by insurance?
Most medical acne treatments, such as consultations, prescription medications, and certain procedures, are covered by insurance when deemed medically necessary. However, cosmetic treatments like chemical peels and laser therapy may not be covered. It’s advisable to check with your insurance provider for specific coverage details.
