A biopsy or mole removal appointment usually takes under 30 minutes. We’ll numb the area with a local anesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Depending on the type, we’ll either shave, punch, or excise the skin.
You’ll go home with a small bandage and aftercare instructions. Most results come back in 1–2 weeks, and we’ll call you to review them together.

Will it hurt?
You’ll feel a quick pinch from the numbing injection, but after that, the procedure itself is painless. Most patients say it’s over before they realize it.
Will I have a scar?
A small scar is possible, depending on the size and location of the biopsy or mole. Our dermatology team uses precise techniques to minimize scarring—especially on visible areas like the face, neck, or hands.
If needed, we also have in-house plastic surgery providers who can assist with closures or cosmetic revisions. You’re in experienced hands either way.
How long do results take?
Biopsy results usually take 7–14 days. Once we have them, we’ll call you to explain the results and next steps, if needed—no waiting and wondering.
Is mole removal covered by insurance?
Insurance coverage for mole removal depends on the medical necessity of the procedure:
- Medically Necessary Removals: If a dermatologist determines that a mole is suspicious for skin cancer or causes symptoms like bleeding, itching, or pain, most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, typically cover the removal.
- Cosmetic Removals: If the mole is removed solely for cosmetic reasons—such as appearance or minor irritation—insurance usually does not cover the procedure, and it would be an out-of-pocket expense.

Dr. Lydia Shedlofsky and her staff are simply amazing! I’ve been trying to switch dermatologists for a while because I felt my previous dermatology office lacked warmth. In contrast, at Summit, the scheduling specialist was kind and understanding. As an educator I need appointments during non school hours. She put me on a wait list and contacted me twice until we found a good slot.
Once I was in the office, the team at check-in was just as warm and welcoming. I noticed as I waited my turn, they were professional and kind to everyone who entered. When it was my turn to go to the back, Maddie and Lauren were equally kind and professional.
