What Is Hair Loss?

Hair loss—also known as alopecia—can affect the scalp or entire body. It can be gradual or sudden, patchy or diffuse, and caused by a range of factors like genetics, hormonal shifts, autoimmune conditions, stress, or nutritional deficiencies.

While not usually dangerous, hair loss can deeply affect self-image and confidence. The good news? Many types of hair loss are treatable—and we’re here to help.

Do I need treatment?

You might benefit from professional evaluation and care if:

  • You’ve noticed sudden or excessive shedding
  • You see bald spots or a widening part
  • Your hair is thinning at the crown or temples
  • You have a family history of hair loss
  • Over-the-counter products haven’t helped
  • You’re feeling stressed or anxious about your appearance

The sooner we identify the cause, the more effective treatment can be.

Our Dermatology PA-Cs

Hair loss is personal—and often emotional. That’s why our Physician Assistants (PA-Cs) take extra care to understand what you’re going through. Trained in medical dermatology, they’re experts in evaluating scalp health, diagnosing the root cause of shedding, and walking patients through real, evidence-based treatment options.

Patients consistently tell us they feel seen and supported by our PA-Cs, who combine clinical skill with clear communication and a kind, grounded approach. Whether you’re experiencing mild thinning or more advanced loss, you’re in compassionate hands.

What to Expect

Your first visit will include a full scalp evaluation, a review of your medical history, and a discussion of symptoms and patterns. We may also recommend lab work to check for hormonal or nutritional causes.

Based on your diagnosis, your PA-C will explain what’s happening and walk you through treatment options—without pressure or jargon. Follow-ups are scheduled to monitor progress and adjust the plan if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes hair loss?
It depends. Common causes include genetic male or female pattern baldness, thyroid disorders, autoimmune conditions, postpartum hormone changes, nutritional deficiencies, and stress. Your provider will help identify what’s affecting you.
Can you actually regrow hair?
In many cases, yes—especially when treatment starts early. Some hair loss can be slowed or reversed with medications or injections. Even if regrowth isn’t full, we can often stabilize it and improve density.
Do I need lab work?
Possibly. Bloodwork can help identify underlying causes like iron deficiency, thyroid issues, or hormonal imbalances. We’ll only recommend tests when they’re helpful for diagnosis.
How long before I see results?
Hair grows slowly, so most treatments take 3–6 months to show noticeable change. We’ll track your progress and adjust the plan if needed.
Is treatment covered by insurance?
Some treatments (like steroid injections or medically necessary labs) may be covered. Others, like certain topical or cosmetic medications, may be out-of-pocket. We’ll walk you through what to expect.
