Dr. Shedlofsky brings a focused passion for skin cancer detection and prevention to every patient she sees. She has trained extensively in skin cancer diagnostics and surgical dermatology, and she takes pride in catching early signs others might miss.
After completing her dermatology training in Arizona and Florida, she joined Summit in 2022 to offer high-quality, accessible care right here in the South. Patients appreciate her sharp eye, kind demeanor, and commitment to early detection.
Outside of clinic hours, she and her husband enjoy bird watching and restoring antique cars—both of which require the same attention to detail she brings to her medical work.
What to Expect
A skin cancer screening usually takes 15–20 minutes. Your provider will ask about your history and examine your skin from head to toe, checking for any unusual moles or spots.
You’ll be given privacy to undress as needed—most patients wear a gown, but you control what areas you’re comfortable having examined.
If something looks suspicious, we may perform a quick biopsy right then. It’s typically painless and takes just a few seconds.

Is a skin cancer screening covered by insurance?
Coverage can vary based on your plan:
- Private insurance (like Blue Cross NC) may cover screenings if they’re considered medically necessary.
- Medicare typically doesn’t cover routine screenings unless a provider finds something concerning.
- North Carolina Medicaid doesn’t usually cover routine screenings, but may cover diagnostic services if symptoms are present.

Do I have to get completely undressed?

If we need to take a biopsy, it’s quick and usually feels like a small pinch.
What happens if you find something?
If we spot anything suspicious, we’ll explain what it is and what we recommend next—often a quick biopsy or follow-up. Everything can be handled here at Summit.

Dr. Lydia Shedlofsky and her staff are simply amazing! I’ve been trying to switch dermatologists for a while because I felt my previous dermatology office lacked warmth. In contrast, at Summit, the scheduling specialist was kind and understanding. As an educator I need appointments during non school hours. She put me on a wait list and contacted me twice until we found a good slot.
Once I was in the office, the team at check-in was just as warm and welcoming. I noticed as I waited my turn, they were professional and kind to everyone who entered. When it was my turn to go to the back, Maddie and Lauren were equally kind and professional.
