Eyelid Surgery in Wilmington and Supply North Carolina

Eyelid surgery also known as Blepharoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgical operations that Dr. Ricciardelli performs. It is a procedure to remove excess skin and puffy bags from the lids and can improve vision, lessen eye fatigue, and take years off your appearance. Eyelid surgery can reduce the amount of skin overhang on the upper eyelids and reduce the fat deposits that create that tired, allergic look.

Dr. Ricciardelli has over 25 years of surgical eye experience and keenly aware of what is important when operating on the eyelids. “It’s important not to reduce the skin too much when doing a blepharoplasty as this can create a hollowing effect behind the eye and an overly tight lid. We want to create a youthful appearance, not a surgical one and that comes from having performed thousands of these procedures.” says Dr. Ricciardelli. There is no substitution for experience and understanding of what creates a natural and refreshed look when you are having eye surgery.

If you're considering eyelid surgery...

Eyelid surgery (technically called blepharoplasty) is a procedure to remove fat–usually along with excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes – features that make you look older and more tired than you feel, and may even interfere with your vision.

However, it won’t remove crow’s feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under your eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows. While it can add an upper eyelid crease to Asian eyes, it will not erase evidence of your ethnic or racial heritage. Blepharoplasty can be done alone, or in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures such as a facelift or browlift.

If you’re considering eyelid surgery, a consultation with Dr. Ricciardelli will explain how it’s performed and what results you can expect.  Sometimes insurance companies will pay for upper eyelid surgery if it compromises your vision. We can help you navigate this process.

The best candidates for eyelid surgery

Blepharoplasty can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with Dr. Ricciardelli.

The best candidates for eyelid surgery are men and women who are physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in their expectations. Most are 35 or older, but if droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have eyelid surgery at a younger age.

Our Patient Barbara’s Eyelid Surgery

My peripheral vision was worse than I thought. After surgery, I was stunned at how well I could see!

My Consultation

At the time I scheduled my consultation with Dr. Ricciardelli I was asked to get a visual fields test from my eye doctor. I knew that I would need this if there was a chance that my insurance company would pay for my surgery. Dr. Ricciardelli’s staff was great at explaining what my insurance company would require for coverage. Beyond that, I was excited to be able to see better and also possibly wear eye makeup without it smudging all over.

Day of Surgery

I elected to have my surgery under local which shorten the time of the surgery to twenty minutes. I am not squeamish so this worked well for me.

My Results

My stitches came out in five days and I had swelling for about two weeks on my upper lids. It’s important not to be on the computer too much and let your eyes rest. I had a hard time staying off the computer and I think this prolonged my swelling. I am so happy that you can actually see my eye color again and I can wear makeup. I feel pretty!
