Natural Looking Nose Surgery

Nose surgery – also called Rhinoplasty is consistently one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. This is not surprising, as the nose is a very prominent facial feature and subtle changes in the nose can have a dramatic effect on the overall aesthetics of the face. More than any other procedure, it is essential to consult with a skilled and experienced board certified plastic surgeon who understands the form and function of the nose.

Dr. Ricciardelli is double-boarded in ear, nose and throat surgery as well as plastic surgery. He is the best trained and most experienced nose surgeon in the Wilmington, NC area with over 25 years of plastic surgery experience. “Every patient is different and every rhinoplasty is different. The surgeon must be able to address those differences to give a natural, balanced appearance that meets that patient’s expectations.” says Dr. Ricciardelli.

If you’re considering rhinoplasty…

Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It may also correct a birth defect or injury, or help relieve some breathing problems.

If you’re considering rhinoplasty, a consultation with Dr. Ricciardelli will give you a basic understanding of the procedure-when it can help, how it’s performed, and what results you can expect. Dr. Ricciardelli is double boarded certified in ear, nose and throat and plastic surgery.

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty enhances facial harmony and the proportions of your nose. It can also correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects in the nose.

Rhinoplasty surgery can change:

  • Nose size in relation to facial balance
  • Nose width at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostrils
  • Nose profile with visible humps or depressions on the bridge
  • Nasal tip that is enlarged or bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked
  • Nostrils that are large, wide, or upturned
  • Nasal asymmetry

If you desire a more symmetrical nose, keep in mind that everyone’s face is asymmetric to some degree. Results may not be completely symmetric, although the goal is to create facial balance and correct proportion.

Who are the best candidates for rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with Dr. Ricciardelli

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you’re physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate.

Rhinoplasty can be performed to meet aesthetic goals or for reconstructive purposes-to correct birth defects or breathing problems.

Is Rhinoplasty surgery for me?
You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose, if you want to correct problems from an injury, or if you have impaired breathing through your nasal passages. Younger patients are good candidates if the nose is fully developed and they are mature enough to understand the process of nose surgery.  It is important that you have realistic expectations about what can be changed and are in good health. Dr. Ricciardelli will meet with you to discuss your desires and what can be achieved.  He is an experienced nasal surgeon who appreciates and understands the nuanced relationships between nose structure, form, and function.
Will I need an open or closed Rhinoplasty?
Dr. Ricciardelli performs both open and closed rhinoplasty. In a “closed” rhinoplasty all the incisions are made inside the nose. An open rhinoplasty has one small external incision between the nostrils and the base of the nose (the columella) in addition to internal incisions. Dr. Ricciardelli will decide which approach to use based on your anatomy and on what changes need to be made. He will examine the internal and external structures of your nose and will discuss with you the best technique to achieve your desired result.
Can Rhinoplasty be combined with other procedures?
Yes.  Rhinoplasty is most often combined with chin augmentation to bring balance to the entire face.  Dr. Ricciardelli will discuss these or other procedures that you might be interested in during your cosmetic consultation.
What do I need to do before surgery?
At your consultation, Dr. Ricciardelli will examine the exterior and interior of your nose, paying particular attention to structure, form, and function. Your goals and expectations will be discussed thoroughly. Often Dr. Ricciardelli will recommend that you bring a picture of a nose that you think is a good match for your face. You may be asked to stop medications that increase your chances of bruising. Feel free to bring a list of questions. We love an informed patient. Dr. Ricciardelli will let you know what to expect before, during, and after your procedure and answer all of your questions.
What can I expect during and after surgery?
Your privacy and safety are very important to us. On the day of your surgery you will park in a designated, convenient space close to the private back door entrance of our office. Your surgery will most likely be performed in our AAAASF (Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities) certified operating suite. If your surgery requires a hospital setting, Dr. Ricciardelli is affiliated with New Hanover Medical Center and Novant Hospital.  Your surgery may take one to three hours depending on the procedure.  After surgery, you will wake up in our warm and caring recovery suite. Our recovery nurse will make sure that you are comfortable and inform your designated driver when you are ready to return to the comfort of your own home that day. You will be given detailed instructions for your specific needs. Early swelling will resolve in about 7-9 days, with a mild residual swelling that can last for months after the surgery. Your nose will be splinted after surgery. In most cases, the splint is removed in about a week. Most patients report mild to moderate pain that is usually well-tolerated with medication. You will be seen back in the office a week after surgery. Expect to have possible bruising, swelling and tenderness after surgery. The bruising is almost always very mild.  Dr. Ricciardelli will call you in the evening to check-in on your progress as well as see you back in the office for your post-operative visits. Our door is always open for any questions.
